Uruguay’s Brightest Coastline

A practical guide to Punta del Este’s beaches, La Mano, Playa Brava, Playa Mansa, marina, Casapueblo, La Barra, José Ignacio, restaurants, nightlife, hotels, tours, summer season, and first-time Uruguay coast essentials.

For first-time visitors to the Uruguayan coast

Punta del Este lives between two waters. The Atlantic crashes onto Playa Brava on the east side of the peninsula. The Río de la Plata laps quietly against Playa Mansa on the west. Most of what makes the destination interesting sits in the choice between those two coasts and the small towns that string east toward José Ignacio.

This guide assumes you want the honest version: when to come, which beach fits which mood, where Casapueblo is worth the trip, how far La Barra and José Ignacio actually are, and what to book before high season closes the door on the good tables.

Punta del Este: Coastline & City

Where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, a slender peninsula juts into the sea. Yachts bob in the marina, the Rambla curves along the shore, and golden light spills across high-rises and beaches.

Plan with Intention

Summer, off-season & coastal planning

Punta del Este is a seasonal coastal destination shaped by Atlantic surf, calm estuary beaches, summer traffic, fragile dunes, marine wildlife, busy restaurants, and quieter local communities outside peak season. Swim in lifeguarded areas, respect the dunes, give sea lions space, and book high-season restaurants and tours well ahead.
